Yes, this quotation indicates conflict. This quote foreshadows how this chapter was majority about Cheryl dealing with her mothers birthday August 18th. In this quotation Cheryl is going through a mental dilemma of how she remembers her mother and how she was going back and forth in her mind about whether her mother affected her life negatively or positively.

2. Does this quotation characterize Cheryl, Paul, or another character? If so in what way does it?

Yes, this quotation characterizes Cheryl but revealing after doing the PCT she still has the same inner demons she battling before the hike, it shows that she has yet to get over the death of her mother.


Quote: " By the time I rose and started walking, I didn't begrudge my mother a thing,  the truth was, in spite of all that she'd be an spectacular mom".

This quotation relates to the theme because she comes to yet another realization about her mother. In this chapter she was trying to figure out how she felt about her mother due to her mothers fiftieth birthday approaching. That year would've made the fifth year of her death. This year Cheryl decided to be angry.

The detail that this quotation provides about the setting is that she is still walking. The description is showing that stopped to take a break to ponder but she then got up to continue her trek. The only thing in the description that indicates the date is she's still talking about her mother due to the fact that her birthday is approaching.

Theme connections

The invisible Man is a book with a wide range of themes and ideologies. Personally I feel the most important themes were racism, stereotypes and  finding your own identity. Most black literature contains the same themes and messages. For example Langston Hughes poem I, Too. All three themes apply to the poem as well as the story because I, Too, was a poem that discussed overcoming obstacles with a single goal in mind. This coincides with the finding your identity them because in order to overcome something you must get a grasp of your own identity and what you want to do. Racism applies to this poem because although not really stated, it can be insinuated that the obstacles were because of racism, and that due to the color of your skin you would not be afforded the same opportunities, there for making it harder to achieve your goal. And lastly the theme stereotypes could be applied to the poem as well as the story because in Hughes poem he hints at stereotypes by using the concepti...
